Chapter 60 – Returning (End)
In a private room. The windows and doors were shut very tightly. At this very moment, a pair of people were sitting face to face.
“You’re really Barcas’ son, Lancas?” the person issuing the alarming cry was precisely Priest Dennis.
And sitting to the opposite of him, was a youth that was younger than him by a few good years. His appearance was quite handsome, a type of awe-inspiring temperament was emitted from his body, his back was perfectly upright: “that’s right, I’m Barcas’ son. Although you’ve never seen me before, I’ve heard quite a bit about your affairs from my father.”
As the young Lancas spoke, he also took down the longsword from behind him and placed it on top of the table. Afterwards, he seriously spoke: “my father sent me to study at the War G.o.d Shrine. Originally, I still had a year left and I could have been promoted to a Paladin1. But while I was at the Shrine, I heard the news of my father and rushed on over. Only, in regards to his death, there was quite a few variations. Can you tell me the truth about the matter? How exactly did my father die in the end? For what reason was he killed by another and further be implicated with so many accusations. As for the killer, how can he remain unpunished. According to what father had previously mentioned to me, Rumont is neither of a n.o.ble birthing and but a commoner. To go so far as to kill a person of a n.o.bility household, exactly what is he relying on?”
Just like the youth said, the person honestly was Tax Officer Barcas’ son. Because he was sent to study at the War G.o.d Shrine when he was 8 years old, thus, he was not at all known in town. This time, because he had suddenly heard from another aristocrat and learning of his own family matters, did he then rush on back from the outside. The end result when he had returned, was that the matters in regards to his father were spoken of in several versions by others. However, the detail was all how and such because of evil, with how and such Rumont putting him to death with a sword.
Lancas knew of Rumont. Last time his father went and saw him, he had even informed him on the down low, saying how the youth had some events with him and that sooner or later he would drive him out just to feel safe. Who knew that this time instead, he would receive the news of his father being murdered.
He only knew that his father was killed by a person called Rumont, and that the person himself was still currently getting away with murder.
But not only that, his father was even charged of countless of accusations. Thinking of what his father had once mentioned to himself, that the town had a Priest and was the same as him, who had once allied together to deal with Rumont. He thought that the other would possibly have all the information that he wanted. Thus, he had come looking for Priest Dennis.
Explaining thoroughly his own circ.u.mstances simply, Lancas then shut his mouth and no longer spoke. His eyes was bright has he watched the other, observing the other’s reaction.
Sitting the opposite of him, Priest Dennis digested the information for a good while. Afterwards, he was still unconvinced and asked: “if you’re Barcas’ son, for what reason haven’t I seen you before?”
Young Lancas gave an unfl.u.s.tered laugh, saying: “because when I was 8 years old, I was sent to study at the War G.o.d s.h.i.+ne. My mother had pa.s.sed away early on, thus, apart from father visiting me at the Shrine these few years, I’ve never once returned home. My father had provided for me the whole time.”
Speaking to here, his pupils shook in saying: “no matter what father did, the majority was for the sake of me studying, that he acc.u.mulated wealth by dishonest means……hearing the news, I returned to have a look. The Shrine still hasn’t changed, it’s still as this magnificent. It’s just that, my father is currently no longer here……why are you still not convinced of my ident.i.ty?”
After given an account of his circ.u.mstances and seeing the other still had an appearance of hesitation, Lancas couldn’t help but wrinkle his brows.
Priest Dennis forced out a smile, saying: “it’s not that I don’t believe you. The current situation is honestly really complicated. Barcas just died and a lot of matters that still haven’t been clarified. Suddenly, there’s a person that has ran over here and said that he’s Barcas’ son. This honestly, cannot but make me suspicious. However……”
He looked over at the sword the youth had placed onto the table: “this sword was issued to you by the War G.o.d Shrine right. There’s the special insignia of the Shrine on the scabbard. If I look at it this way. Even if Rumont still wants to frame me, neither would he have the capability to really find a person of the War G.o.d Shrine to come here. Okay, I’ll believe in your ident.i.ty. I’ll first tell you about your father’s death then.”
On this matter, Priest Dennis on the contrary did not greatly tell a tall tale. After all, this type of matter, so long as the other attentively inquired in the town a few times, he would eventually learn of the true circ.u.mstances one day.
What’s more, Priest Dennis himself was neither too clear of what the situation was at the time. As a result, he could only explain in detail to Lancas what he came to understand during the general a.s.sembly.
In the end, Priest Dennis appeared to feel that not adding to the flames was honestly unsatisfactory. Consequently, he sighed again and said: “your father also had convictions in the Earth G.o.ddess. But because of this criminal charge, his burial was thus quite unkind. It’s unknown what kind of treatment he would have when he reaches the kingdom of the G.o.ds. Yet nowadays in the town, Rumont is well-regarded and complacent for a while.”
When Lancas heard this, his complexion did not change. Only, his pupils flashed with a murderous intent. Seeing Priest Dennis had an appearance of swaying from beginning to end, deep down he was despising him in feeling that this man’s temperament was not firm and resolute, that he would in this lifetime forever remain at Rank 4. But after thinking, he then asked: “the Agricultural G.o.ddess, Irideus, in the end still maintains the way of the Neutral. Rumont murdered my father as well as spread out so many accusations and not letting him rest in peace. My Lord Edmund is a War G.o.d and doesn’t have this restriction. My Lord emphasizes battles as a type of baptism. Victory is naturally justice. By chance, I was on the brink of a promotion. If I kill him, it’s only because of experiencing a test as well as obtaining the favour of G.o.d———you can relax, us two would naturally be unable to reconcile our differences!”
Seeing Lancas clarify his relating att.i.tude, Priest Dennis’ face immediately showed a satisfied smile. However, he quickly held back his smile, asking: “following on, what are you planning on doing? Rumont is no longer the same as in the past. Not only did he promote to a Rank 2 Druid, he’s also surrounded by a group of people. He’s even opened a drugstore, making the Adventurers ardent of him. Wanting to make trouble for him won’t be that easy.”
Pausing for a moment, he again spoke: “Rumont is at least still dealing on the lawful side of things. Paying one’s life for murdering is honestly correct. However……although Rumont is deserving of death, do you feel that after you kill him, you’ll also be able to escape the judgement of the law? You can’t always live for revenge, will you also lose yourself to it? I do have a plan though, what do you think huh?”
It wasn’t that Priest Dennis was thinking much for the sake of Lancas. In honesty, it’s just that in the recent events of Barcas being killed, if Rumont was also then killed on premeditated murder, then, it was quite possible that even himself would be implicated. Thus, he could not at all advocate revenge blatantly.
Hearing this, Lancas showed a thin ice-cold sneer and jerking his mouth up, he coldly asked: “it’s only natural that you don’t need to teach me this point. My Lord’s Shrine still needs to comply with the law; at least on the exterior surface……however, what plan do you have?”
Since the other didn’t agree for him to go avenging publicly, then in that case, was there perhaps other methods?
Honestly, the moment he learnt that Lancas was one that was prepared to be a Paladin, Priest Dennis had actually started to scheme already. He was a Priest, and in regards to such situations, he obviously understood them. In this world, a Paladin wasn’t really one to hold the so-called public sense of justice, instead it refers to obtaining divine favour. Becoming an exclusive Warrior in the path for the chosen G.o.d; fighting for the way and benefit of the G.o.d.
