144 Invitation (1/2)
Chamberlain had just received the list of invited guests. His eyes scanned the list and he easily caught on to the fact that amongst the privileged guests, he wasn't particularly close to anyone. They were mostly political party members and business partners of his father and their children.
”Another political party,” he sighed. The fact that his wedding wasn't spared of politics did not really bother him. After all, that was his father, he utilized any and every thing. No one could escape.
Raising his head, he gazed at Carl through the glass door. ”May be, he could be my best man...”
Carl who was focusing on the three monitors on his desk did not realize when his boss appeared before him. The knocking sound on his desk alerted him.
”Good, you're here. I was thinking maybe you could get me a team, that way I could work faster and a more secure and private office wouldn't be a bad idea.” Carl straightforwardly raised his suggestion.
Chamberlain's lips curled up, ”You just want to run away from me.” He gently placed his hands in his pockets, assuming a confident pose. However, he was far from confident.
Now that he was before Carl, he was unsure. He did not know why he felt he needed someone there just for him. Maybe it was a bad idea after all, they weren't really friends or even close. Besides, wasn't he already used to it?
Maintaining his confident aura, moving from one business or political meeting to another. Giving acceptable compliments, paying false attention, giving half-hearted smiles and congratulations.
For some reason, after getting to know Carl, seeing him express himself freely, he couldn't help but be drawn to him. Carl was like a breath of fresh air in his polluted world.
Of course, he would never let his guard down around others. It was dangerous to let others in. A small mistake could cost him everything.
And the more he looked at Carl, he realized how similar he looked and acted like that person. His eyes lowered for a moment to hide his emotions.
”I think you should be my best man.” Chamberlain said.
Carl's eyebrows furrowed, ”When did I become your friend?” Not waiting for his answer, he continued, ”You should also know that most people think I'm abroad and finally, in case you've forgotten, I can't leave this State.”
”Are you sure you can't leave this State?” He paused before adding, ”Or you don't want to. Why don't you take this as an opportunity to show your father that you're no longer under him and thus you don't have to obey his every command?”
Carl laughed scornfully.
