As Kusaka raised his hands he got attacked and raised his sword as well in order to block Hitsugaya's attack.

Leaping towards him, Hitsugaya attacks him, forcing Kusaka to block. When Kusaka slashed and forced Hitsugaya back, the other Shinigami express surprise as Rangiku runs towards him.

Hitsugaya: ”Matsumoto stay back, this is my fight.”

Mayuri watching all this started to wonder why Hitsugaya deserted his post if he did not intend to betray to Gotei 13.

Soi Fon wonders why he attacked them when they tried to arrest Kusaka, who she then asks Sora about it...

Sora: ”Then is killing him once by the rules not enough for him.??”

Sora: ”Hitsugaya is just trying to make amends for the mistakes which he has made.”

Soi Fon: ”What mistakes are you talking about??”

Sora then explained to them that Kusaka was once a nobleman who swore his loyalty to Soul Society, he stated he would have been a great Shinigami if it were not for the twin Zanpakutō, but because of his duel with Hitsugaya, he lost not only Hyōrinmaru but his honour and his life.

Confirming this, Sora says Hitsugaya blamed himself for everything which has happened, and Senna stated Hitsugaya could not bear the thought of destroying him again with the rules of being a Shinigami captain.

Rangiku: ”Seeing Kusaka again must have been devastating, and he was so racked with guilt, he deserted his post and went after him in an attempt to settle things, knowing he would be accused of treason and it could cost him his life.”

As Hitsugaya and Kusaka cross blades, Kusaka says Hitsugaya knew all along it would come to this, which Hitsugaya confirms. Stating he thought Hitsugaya was more intelligent than this, Kusaka says he was wrong.

Hitsugaya: ”No you are right, i should have been more intelligent. Because when i saw you i thought of truly deserting my seat and settle things with you.”

Kusaka: ”Oh?? Then what changed??”
