Slide 1601
”His Majesty the Emperor will meet you at the Schönbrunn Palace at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning. Prime Minister Tisza Istvan, Minister Andrássy the Younger, and Count Oboni will be prepared.” When visiting guests, both the etiquette and demeanor are impeccable, but in the eyes of Hungarians, anyone can see the dissatisfaction and contempt hidden in the dark color of the other party.
”We are now like bereaved dogs, but our former partners have thrown us some bone power as charity like their masters.” Hungarian Independence Party leader Count Oboni said angrily after the Austrian emissary left.
”So what? We are now in a weak position, and even our government is in danger. The situation is like this, we have to bow our heads.” Prime Minister Tisza shook his head and said, this has been two months, the Hungarian prime minister's third The second group visited the Austrian Emperor.
The Borusinov offensive before the death of the Russians caused so much damage to Hungary, it can even be said to directly shake the country of Hungary! At least half of Hungary's troops were defeated or severely injured. The field corps on the front line has lost all its losses. Now, there is no longer a formed Hungarian legion on the eastern front. The remaining troops have returned to the mainland and Romania.
After the disastrous defeat, Tisza Istvan immediately took action. On the one hand, the blockade of news in the country slowed down the negative impact of the disastrous defeat on the Kingdom of Hungary. At the same time strengthen the control of domestic minorities. On the other hand, he immediately went to Vienna to see the Austrian Emperor for help.
The first time Prime Minister Tisza came was to ask the Austrian Emperor to allow the Hungarian Army to withdraw to the country for rest and reorganization. On the one hand, it is the inevitable result of the disastrous defeat, and on the other hand, it is to suppress the domestic minority forces who are ready to move! You know, the ethnic minorities in Hungary also have an army!
Take the army of 1906 as an example. In the 1,000-strong Austro-Hungarian army, there are 267 Germans, 223 Hungarians, 135 Czechs, 85 Poles, 81 Lucinians, and 67 Croatians. And Serbs, 64 Romanians, 38 Slovaks, 26 Slovenians and 14 Italians.
Among the 1,000 people who belong to Hungary are Hungarians, Lusinians, Romanians, Slovaks, and some Croatian and other ethnic groups. The ratio of military personnel between Hungary and the other three nationalities is about 223 to 183. If you count other ethnic groups, the proportion will only be higher! In other words, about half of the Hungarian army is from other ethnic groups, and they are not in harmony with the Hungarian ethnic group.
And when the main Hungarian national army suffered a crushing defeat on the Eastern Front, other minorities that have been suppressed will naturally have other thoughts. If they had this idea before, they did not have this strength. So now, when the Hungarian national army is greatly reduced and the proportion of ethnic minorities continues to rise, what will other ethnic groups that have already obtained guns think about Hungary? It certainly won't be a good thing!
Therefore, as soon as the news of the disastrous defeat came back, Prime Minister Tisza went to Vienna as soon as possible, hoping that the Austrian Emperor would allow the Hungarian Army to withdraw from the Eastern Front and return to the mainland to suppress the rebellion. For the first time, the Austrian emperor’s attitude was not bad, and he said very generously that the Hungarian Army could return to the mainland without participating in the subsequent Eastern Front wars.
