Chapter 13 - Induced Labour (1/2)

When the judge read out the sentence, Xu Zijin was very calm. ‘Although I can’t be cruel to others, I can be cruel to myself. Fu Sinian, I finally escape from your control,’ she thought to herself.

When she walked past Fu Sinian in handcuffs, she suddenly stopped and looked up at him. His eyebrows knitted and his lips curled downwards into a scowl. She had a feeling of satisfaction at his defeat.

She put on a sunny smile and looked into the eyes of the man whose face was livid with rage. Then she bowed low to him with a cold expression on her face, her eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep. With a raspy voice filled with sorrow, she said, “Fu Sinian, I fell in love with you the first time I set my eyes on you. I was five years old that year. I have always known that you don’t love me, but I refused to face up to reality. I believed that someday you would be moved by my affection for you and we could live happily together.

But reality gave me a hard slap. You will never fall in love with me. No matter how hard I try, you are still hard-hearted to me. Because of you, I lost my family and friends, and my heart is broken. Now I have nothing at all. So, I’m no longer afraid of you.

Fu Sinian, from now on, you are no longer my husband and I have nothing to do with you.”

Fu Sinian’s face darkened and something like panic overtook him. He felt as if his heart had been struck by a huge iron clamp, a sharp pain shooting up to his chest, and he perceived the taste of blood in his throat.

He clenched his fists and blue veins stood out on the back of his hands. He was about to say something but Xu Zijin shut him off.

“Fu Sinian, your power over me is finished.”

‘Because of loving you, I lived on an emotional tightrope and did my best to please you.

But now I don’t love you, so I am all-conquering and have the power to escape from you,’ she thought.

Snowflakes were swirling in the air. Even though they stood close, it seemed like they were in two different worlds. To Fu Sinian, she was so near yet so far as if she was going to leave him forever.

“Xu Zijin, do you think that you can escape from me in this way? You are daydreaming!” Fu Sinian gave her a cold look, stood up and left.

Many years later, Shen Zhangzhu asked Xu Zijin, “Why did you admit that you kill Mu Anan? You knew clearly that you would have no future after you were convicted of murder. Do you think that it was worth it?”

Brilliant sunshine illuminated the garden. Xu Zijin stared out of the window with a smile and replied, “Yes. Apart from death, only in the jail could I stay away from Fu Sinian. At that time, I regarded the place without Fu Sinian as my home.”

After that day, Xu Zijin became the No. 487 prisoner in the jail. After being sent to jail, she had a feeling of peace and serenity. From then on, she would never shed tears because of Fu Sinian. She lay huddled up on the bed and gently stroked her swollen belly.
