Chapter 298 - Greatest pains in life (1/2)

It would be impossible for anyone alive to avoid injury and illness in their lifetime. Anyone resolute wouldn’t retreat in the face of illness. It might be difficult for them, but they would still bravely face the illness.

Meanwhile, the old man patient’s children weren’t wrong for wanting to have him receive medical treatment. The one in the wrong was the damned illness. The children wanted to be filial, yet the parent didn’t want to receive the medical treatment. This was probably one of the greatest pains in life.

Even though the children knew that no hope or miracle would appear, they still couldn’t help but wish for one to come. They hoped for pity from the heavens and that their father could become healthy again. However, reality was always cruel. Their father weakened every day.

One day, he summoned his three sons to the hospital. The old man’s grandson, granddaughter, and daughters-in-law all came together as well. His wife also stood next to him while dripping tears. The old man was now completely refusing all medical treatment. He wouldn’t accept no matter what. He personally pulled out the IV drip needle in him.

“Good boy! Good girl!” The old man was really weak. He could only sit up with the support of his blanket. Even so, he held onto his grandson’s and granddaughter’s hand without letting go.

He kept patting them. He was unwilling to be separated from them. How much he doted on his grandchildren was quite obvious to see.

“I want to return home. I want to get some sun. I want to lay under the black locust tree in our yard. Even if I die, I want to die at home. I know better than anyone about my own body. All of this fluid infusion every day is already useless for me. No need to cry. Why cry? I’m already almost 70 years old. As Confucius said, a man seldom lives to be 70 years old. All of you are doing quite well. You’ve gotten married and had children. My task is finished. I’m more than satisfied!” The old man then paused for a moment to catch his breath after saying so much. His wife immediately went over to slowly pat him on the back.

“Dad! Rest a little while. Rest assured; this can be treated successfully!” The oldest son forced down his tears while holding onto his father’s arm.

“Don’t you try to fool your father. Ever since young, you’ve always pursed your lips whenever you’re lying. You think I don’t know? You’re the oldest, so you always try to think about how to take care of the elderly and protect the younger ones. You’re wonderful, truly. You had to suffer when you were younger. You didn’t have anything to eat at the time. Your mother had no breast milk at all. You had to eat goat buns for the first 100 days of your life. You were really understanding ever since young. From now on, there’s nothing that I have to worry about at all. All of you are so filial. I won’t have to worry about your mother. Oldest son, listen to me and take me home.”

“Dad!” The oldest son was unable to take it anymore. He crouched on his father’s skinny leg and couldn’t help but cry loudly. This middle-aged man was heartbroken, truly heartbroken.

“Alright, you’re in your 40s, you’re almost 50 already. Why cry? Second son, I almost sold you off after you were born. Your older brother and your mother cried so pitifully, grabbing onto your tiny hands and refusing to let go. Sigh! It feels like it happened just yesterday. In the future, make sure to help out your older brother as much as you can. You would probably be a southerner today if it wasn’t for your older brother!”

“Dad, I understand. Please rest for now!” The second son was unable to wipe away his tears cleanly as more kept coming.

“It’s fine. I’ve rested enough. I don’t want to rest anymore. Everyone is here today, so I’m really happy. Third son, look at how unseemly you are. You can’t even compare to my grandson. Why are you crying like that? Out of the three sons, your mother and I spoiled you the most as you were the youngest. I’ve beaten your oldest and second brothers before, but I’ve never even touched you. I can’t go on much longer, so you really must listen to your older and second brother in the future. Don’t be foolish. They’re not young anymore. You’re the youngest, so help them out as much as you can.”

The third son kneeled directly on the floor and held his father’s feet. The third son’s body twitched, and he was unable to even raise his head because of how much he was crying.

“Our daughters-in-law are all so wonderful. You all are filial and respect your elders. Thank you for being with my sons. Allow me properly thank you for everything!” Although the old man was the father-in-law to the daughters-in-law, all three daughters-in-law really respected him because of the way he did things. They were also heartbroken to see their father-in-law in such a weak state.

“Dear Wife, let’s go. Take me home!” The old man then let go of his grandson and grabbed onto his wife’s hands with both hands.

“Alright, we’ll go home, home.” The wife’s toothless mouth was trembling, and her words contained endless unwillingness and sadness.
